 OPERATIONS CHIEF OF THE CAPE COD CANAL RECEIVES PATRIOT AWARD

BOURNE, MA. October 20, 2009. The scenic Cape Cod Canal was the backdrop today for the presentation of The Patriot Award to Mr. Roger Mathurin, Director of Marine Operations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps of Engineers operates and maintains the canal year round. The nomination for the award was made by Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9) Jim Deal, U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. The Senior Enlisted Man praised Mr. Mathurin as an understanding and exceptionally supportive boss. Mr. Mathurin, a former member of the Coast Guard himself, stated that his actions were no big deal. He said "I have been there and I know what it's like to have to wear two hats, a civilian one and a military one!" On hand were over 30 of Jim Deal's co-workers.   

The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense agency established in 1972. The mission of ESGR is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the USERRA law of 1994 and resolving conflicts through mediation. The MA Committee has more than 35 volunteers dedicated to helping every "Citizen Soldier". On hand representing MAESGR were Awards Director Roger Fortin and Program Support Specialist .David St. Germain.
