ATTLEBORO, MA. November 23, 2009. Chief Richard Pierce of the Attleboro Police Department is no stranger to MAESGR or to being a great leader. In the recent past, he has penned a Statement of Support and has been honored with the Patriot Award twice before by his officers. This particular award was requested by Specialist Gilbert Bechtel, a member of the Massachusetts National Guard and also of the Attleboro Police Department. Officer Bechtel has just returned from deployment. Several members of the Attleboro Police force were on hand for the presentation.   

 The city of Attleboro was founded as a town in 1694 and as a city in 1914. Attleboro has a population of approximately 42,000 people. The Attleboro Police Department is led by Chief Richard Pierce and is composed of 75 sworn dedicated police officers. This staff is made up of 49 patrol officers, 8 detectives, 8 sergeants, 5 lieutenants and 3 captains. The organization is supported by 9 full-time E911 telecommunicators and 4 civilian employees. The Department is comprised of 5 divisions: Patrol, Detective, Community Policing, Prosecution and Service.   

The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense agency established in 1972. The mission of ESGR is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the USERRA law of 1994 and resolving conflicts through mediation. The MA Committee has more than 35 volunteers dedicated to helping every "Citizen Soldier". On hand representing MAESGR was Program Support Specialist David St. Germain.
